Is My Donation Tax Deductible?
For US taxpayers, generally yes.

Contributions from US taxpayers are deductible to the extent allowed by law.

What changed for 2026
US charitable deduction rules changed materially for the 2026 tax year. The main points for individual donors:
- If you do not itemize, you may now deduct up to $1,000, or $2,000 for a married couple filing jointly, for cash gifts made directly to charities. This did not exist before. Gifts to a donor advised fund do not qualify.
- If you do itemize, only the part of your total charitable giving above 0.5 percent of your adjusted gross income is deductible.
- If you are in the top tax bracket, the value of your itemized charitable deduction is limited to the equivalent of a 35 percent rate.
- The 60 percent of AGI limit for cash gifts to public charities is now permanent.
Figures and rules current as at September 2026.
What we can and cannot give you a receipt for
We acknowledge every gift we can identify. For gifts of $250 or more, US rules require a written acknowledgment from us before you claim a deduction, and we provide one.
We cannot issue a tax receipt for a grant recommended from a donor advised fund, because your deduction was taken when you funded it.
If you gave and did not receive an acknowledgment, or the details are wrong, email info@saolafoundation.org and we will correct it.
Giving from an IRA
If you are 70 and a half or older, you can make a qualified charitable distribution directly from an IRA to a charity. The distribution is excluded from your taxable income rather than deducted, which can be more valuable, and it can count toward a required minimum distribution. The limit for 2026 is $111,000 per person and it is adjusted for inflation.
The transfer has to go directly from the IRA custodian to us. A distribution paid to you first does not qualify. Qualified charitable distributions cannot be made to a donor advised fund.
Giving from the UK
The Saola Foundation is a US organization. Gift Aid is not available on gifts made directly to us, and UK taxpayers do not get UK relief on them. Donations are processed in US dollars, and PayPal will show you the amount in pounds before you confirm.
If you pay tax in both the US and the UK, or if you are a UK taxpayer making a substantial gift, dual-qualified giving vehicles such as the CAF American Donor Fund exist precisely for this and can secure relief in both jurisdictions. They charge a fee. Email info@saolafoundation.org and we will point you in the right direction.
This is not tax advice
We are a conservation organization, not a tax advisor, and nothing on this page is advice about your situation. Tax treatment depends on your circumstances and rules change. Please speak to your own tax professional.
