Leave a Gift in Your Will
Securing the Annamite Mountains Bioregion is work measured in decades. A gift in your will is the way to fund work on that timescale.
This page has what you or your attorney need. If you would rather talk to a person first, email info@saolafoundation.org.

Why a legacy gift matters here
Most conservation funding arrives in one-year and three-year cycles, which is shorter than the problem. Our long term goal is measured over 25 years: preventing the loss of species that exist nowhere else, and protecting and restoring the Annamite ecosystems they depend on, while the national capacity to manage that biodiversity in perpetuity is built alongside it. The portfolio we are building toward that goal now runs to four programs across the Bioregion, three of them new.
Legacy gifts are the only reliable way an organization of our size can plan on that horizon. They are also the only form of funding that is not tied to a program cycle, which means they can hold the strategy steady when grant priorities move.
What we do with unrestricted legacies
Unless you direct otherwise, we use legacy gifts where the need is greatest at the time they arrive. In practice that has meant field operations: teams, equipment, and the months in the forest that no grant cycle reliably covers.
You can restrict a gift to a specific program if you prefer, whether that is the Saola Search Program, Biodiversity Value Mapping, the Large-antlered Muntjac program or the Bolikhamxay Leaf Monkey program. If you intend to, please contact us first, so we can make sure the restriction is one we will still be able to honor.

Suggested bequest language
Give this to your attorney. It is a starting point, not legal advice, and your attorney should adapt it to your circumstances and your state’s law.

Specific property:
I give, devise, and bequeath to Saola Foundation, a nonstock nonprofit corporation organized under the laws of the State of Delaware, with its principal office at 512 N 50th Street, Milwaukee, WI 53208, Federal Tax ID 82-3731270, [description of the property] to be used for its general purposes.
A gift that takes effect only if others do not survive you:
If [name of beneficiary] does not survive me, I give, devise, and bequeath his or her share to Saola Foundation, a nonstock nonprofit corporation organized under the laws of the State of Delaware, with its principal office at 512 N 50th Street, Milwaukee, WI 53208, Federal Tax ID 82-3731270, to be used for its general purposes.
Other ways to leave a gift without changing your will
You can name us as a beneficiary on accounts that pass outside your will, which usually takes one form and no attorney:
- A retirement account, an IRA or 401(k). Often the most tax-efficient asset to leave to a charity, because a charity does not pay income tax on it and an individual heir generally would.
- A life insurance policy.
- A bank or brokerage account, using a payable-on-death or transfer-on-death designation.
You will need our legal name and EIN above.
If you have already included us
Please tell us, at info@saolafoundation.org. There is no obligation and it does not bind you to anything. It lets us thank you properly, and it lets us plan.
A note on tax
For US estates, charitable bequests are generally deductible for federal estate tax purposes without a percentage limit. Whether estate tax is a consideration for you at all depends on the size of your estate and the exemption in force at the time.
