Position: Field Coordinator

Saola Foundation for Annamite Mountains Conservation:

The mission of the Saola Foundation (SF) is to help save Saola in the wild, and to conserve other threatened wildlife in the forests of the Annamite Mountains. We are the only chartered organization in the world to focus solely on the conservation of Saola and its home of the Annamite Mountains. We are a small, deeply committed group of field conservationists, with decades of collective experience in the Saola’s range, in the effective leadership of non-profit organizations.


The Saola Foundation are preparing to launch an intensive search for wild Saola in Lao PDR, with the establishment of a national detection dog program, to be based in Luangpabang, and formation of a Wildlife Tracking Team, to be based primarily in Bolikhamxay. Both components require initial program development including a national recruitment drive for national talent, to act as dog handlers and as wildlife trackers.

Job Description:

The Field Coordinator will initially coordinate with local partners the recruitment of SF field staff and teams, with direction and supervision from the Technical Director and Lao Programs Director. As field activities begin, the Field Coordinator will transition to the ex situ coordination of logistics, human resources and procurement needs for those field activities, as well as co-ordination and/or assistance of other in-country SF activities, with direction and supervision from the Technical Director and Lao Programs Director.

  • Develop and deploy an effective recruitment program for national talent.

  • Compile details of prospective candidates.

  • Lead on the logistical arrangements required to screen and interview candidates.

  • Help with initial mentoring of new recruits (i.e. roles and responsibilities, SF mission, etc.), and subsequent line management as required.

  • Co-ordinate all aspects of field logistics during preparation and intensive survey phases, including procurement and import of equipment, transportation to and from field sites, team accommodations, other supplies as necessary.

  • Co-ordinate in country aspects of field sample analysis (e.g. genetic samples) including potential international export of materials (especially logistics and interagency relationships).

  • Assist Lao Programs Director with the Government of Lao (GoL) liaison at central and provincial level.

  • Assist Lao Programs Director with facilitation of permissions for international expertise; primary contact of international expertise in terms of logistical arrangements and other needs.

  • Assist CEO and Lao Programs Director with partner co-ordination (i.e Wildlife Conservation Society Lao PDR, Free The Bears, Asian Arks, Saola Working Group - International Union for Conservation of Nature Lao PDR).

  • Assist CEO and President with identifying and approaching potential national donors and Saola Champions.

  • Management and collation of stakeholder communication materials arising from Lao based activities, for both Lao and internationally stakeholders, the latter co-ordinated with SF’s communications staff and volunteers. 


Skills & Experience:

  • Fluent in English

  • Excellent communication and networking skills

  • Experience of logistics management

  • Experience with GoL liaisons


Term:  1-year consultancy contract with opportunity for expansion


Hours: Full-time


Salary: $1,000 – $1,500 pcm, depending on experience level


Location: Ex situ, based Vientiane Captial initially, but travelling as needed to assist with logistics.
