Bill has been working on wildlife conservation in the range countries of the Saola for more than 25 years, a good part of that while living in Lao PDR.  In 2006 he co-founded (with Simon Hedges) the IUCN Saola Working Group, and served as its Coordinator until 2019.  In 2015, the IUCN Species Survival Commission recognized Bill with its Harry Messel Award for Conservation Leadership, for his contributions to Saola conservation.  His work on Saola in Lao PDR is profiled in the book by William deBuys, The Last Unicorn (Little, Brown and Company, 2014).
